Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Introduction

On December 10, 2015, President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) into law. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB) of 2002 and reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. The purpose of ESSA is to provide all students the opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps.

ESSA requires that students take State tests in Grades 3-11 in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Based on student academic growth and demonstrated proficiency on these assessments, schools will be placed into categories for targeted State attention (priority, focus and reward schools).
