Report Cards - Elementary

South Brunswick School District has developed a comprehensive elementary curriculum aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), and the K-5 standards-based report cards are designed to give you a clear and accurate picture of your child’s progress toward key end-of-year grade-level expectations. It outlines the knowledge and skills expected for the grade, highlights areas of strength, and identifies where your child is still developing.

By sharing this information, we aim to strengthen the partnership between home and school, ensuring your child’s continued growth and confidence as a learner. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher for more insight. Informational Screencast: All About Standards Based Report Cards   K-5 Performance Scale

For ELA, Social Studies, and Science, a “Meeting Learning Standards/Competencies or 3” means your child has consistently met the end-of-year expectations for that standard. Most students will receive a “Developing or 2” during the school year, indicating they are on track to meet end-of-year goals. Earning a “2” is the expected progress for Semester 1.

For Math, the expected progress for Semester 1 is often a “3” because boundaries are set within the indicator.  For example, while the indicator in Grade 2 states, “ Understands that the value of a digit is dependent on its place within the number,” in Semester 1 students demonstrate this within 500 while in Semester 2 they are expected to demonstrate this within 1,000.  Therefore, while your child may receive a “3” in Semester 1, this does not automatically mean he/she will receive a 3 in Semester 2. Refer to the rubrics below to see the boundary language for each indicator.  Additionally, students can receive a 3* in Semester 1 (for some, not all indicators), but not Semester 2 because the report card does not measure beyond grade level standards.
