About Our Program The Crossroads Music Department delivers group instrumental, vocal music instruction, and hosts many large and small instrumental and vocal rehearsals each week. We are involved with teacher education programs from The College of New Jersey, Rutgers University, and Westminster Choir College. We have earned the reputation of being one of the finest middle school music programs in the state. We provide a variety of performance opportunities for our students in many different musical idioms including Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, Small Chamber Ensembles, Orchestras, Vocal Ensembles, Pep Bands, Handbell Choirs, Pit Orchestras and Musical Theater. Crossroads Music Students perform in Winter and Spring concerts as well as Music Festivals throughout the year. Over the past few years, we have participated in the "Music in the Parks" festival, sponsored by Festivals of Music, where we have traveled to Hershey, Pa., to participate in an overnight adjudicated festival.

Instrumental Performing EnsemblesOur Instrumental Music Performing groups at Crossroads are designed to challenge our young musicians at many different levels. We provide instruction as well as ensemble and performance opportunities. Our students experience a sense of pride, a sense of accomplishment and a sense of belonging. This design is the impetus of each of our performing groups.

Concert Band and Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble The Concert Bands are performing organizations that meet before school on days to be designated in the fall. Our goal for the Concert Bands is to expand the technical knowledge and ability of each individual member as well as to increase music reading skills and to build a higher level of sophistication into each performance. They will explore and grow in the skill areas of technique, articulation, phrasing, and rhythm.

Concert and Symphonic Strings The Orchestra Ensembles perform traditional middle school orchestra literature both in string orchestra and full orchestra settings. Our goal for our orchestra members is to expand the technical knowledge and ability of each individual player as well as to increase music reading skills and to build a higher level of sophistication into each performance.

Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Band The Crossroads Jazz Bands rehearse three mornings a week before school. Students must audition to become members of these ensembles. Also, membership in one of the concert bands or orchestra is mandatory. The Jazz Band performs at the South Brunswick Senior Center, in Middle School and High School Jazz Band festivals throughout New Jersey and has performed at Board of Education meetings and other meetings celebrating the successes of our school district.

Treble Choir, Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble Our Vocal Music Performing groups at Crossroads are designed to challenge our young musicians at many different levels. We provide instruction as well as ensemble and performance opportunities. Our students experience a sense of pride, a sense of accomplishment and a sense of belonging. Progress is monitored at rehearsals and lessons and each student must earn the privilege to perform in concerts and festivals. Attendance at all choir rehearsals is mandatory. Student will receive a grade on their report card that is an average of music lesson grades and rehearsal grades. Students must audition to become members of the Vocal Ensemble which meets before school on days to be designated in the fall.

Handbell Choir In addition to the opportunities students have in their general music class, there is also a performing group for handbells. The group meets one day a week after school on a day to be designated in the fall. This group is a select ensemble and is determined by the instructor. The group performs at the both the Winter and Spring concerts. The goal is to expand the musical repertoire for students who are interested in other aspects of music.
