South Brunswick High School
Tech-Prep: Pathways to Business
Why should I enroll in the Tech-Prep: Pathways to Business program?
The program allows students to jump start their college career by earning college credit for courses completed while in high school.
Can I take these business courses without electing the college credit option?
Yes, but you must elect the college credit option to enroll in the Pathways to Business program.
Will the credits transfer to other colleges, or do they only transfer to Middlesex County College and Kean University?
Transfer of credits is ultimately up to the college you attend. Many traditional colleges will accept the transfer credit, either as an equivalent business course or as an elective. However, if you enroll in the program and attend Middlesex County College and/or Kean University, you are assured full transfer credit and an easy and seamless transition from high school to post-secondary education.
What are the benefits of enrolling in the Pathways to Business program over just taking the courses for high school credit?
Students enrolled in the Pathways to Business program enjoy the following exclusive benefits:
    • Connections to business through job shadowing at various companies.
    • Ability to experience college life through visits to and class observations on the Middlesex County College and Kean University campuses.
    • Involvement in Career Days at SBHS and/or at the college campuses.
    • Participation on field trips to see businesses in action.
    • Insights into business professions through mentorships and internships.
    • Assistance from teachers, counselors, and college advisors to aid in a seamless transition from SBHS to college.
    • Support to better prepare you for success in college.
    • Opportunities to network with business partners and establish job contacts.
How are these courses different than other courses at SBHS?
The Tech-Prep courses, as with all of the courses in the Business Education program, allow students to connect knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to real-world contexts through applied academics and hands-on learning activities. Students learn the answer to the question "When will I ever use this?" through a variety of projects and in-class discussion.
Is there a fee for the college credit?
College credit is offered through Middlesex County College’s High School Scholars program. The fee has been $100 per course in recent years. This is a minimal cost to consider when compared to fees for full college tuition at any institution.
How is this Tech-Prep program different from traditional vocational education models?
Tech-Prep is a part of the foundation of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act.  It represents the first major federal initiative promoting comprehensive, ongoing links between secondary schools and the college sector.  The current Tech-Prep model promotes rigorous academics and programs in which students begin college study while still in high school and then continue to a traditional two-year or four-year college to earn a degree. Academics and structured learning experiences are equally emphasized.
How do I apply for the Tech-Prep: Pathways to Business program?
