Home - School Communication

Communication is done through email.  Class emails are sent out on a regular basis to update parents on what ares of the curriculum we are working on.  Individual emails are also sent on a regular basis to update parents on their student's progress.  Please utilize this and the fifth grade web page for project updates, rubrics, homework assigments, and more.  To contact Mr. Rattien, please do so via email at peter.rattien@sbschools.org.  A response is generally given within 24 hours time.

Need Sudoku Help?

While our Sudoku work has come to a close, many students (and parents) continue to challenge themselves with Sudoku puzzles.  Here are some tips to help you through those frustrating times.

  • Check to see which column, row, or mini-grid has the least number of digits missing.
  • Make sure the digit you're putting in is definitely the right one.  There's no guessing in Sudoku, and one mistake can come back to haunt and frustrate your eraser!
  • Write down which numbers are just outside the column, row, or mini-grid you're working on.  Then, cross them off as you fill them in.
  • If you can't fill in a certain box, you can still put in the possible answers.  Then, when you look at it from another direction, you may know what to put in.
  • Most importantly, if you get frustrated...STOP.  Take a break or move on to another one for the time being.
  • You can do it!

Online Curriculum Resources

Social Studies: ClassZone - Once there, click on middle school social studies.  Students have access to lesson reviews, practice quizzes, and more.

Math: Successnet - Once logged in, students can access online games, practice tests, and all textbook pages.  Usernames are the first name and last name as one word (all lowercase) and the password is mjschool.  For example, John Smith's username would be johnsmith and his password would be mjschool.

Study Island

Study Island is a great way to extend student's learning into the home.  All that's needed is a computer and internet connection.  To use Study Island, log on to www.studyisland.com, and have your child enter their username and password.  Make sure that your child uses pencil and paper when necessary.  Study Island is also a great preparation tool for the NJ ASK3 exam in March.
