6 Day Cycle
All elementary schools in South Brunswick will operate on a “six day” schedule to integrate art, music, library, Spanish and physical education.
Beginning with the first full day of school, all days throughout the year will be numbered consecutively from Day 1 through Day 6 in a repeating pattern. Regardless of the day of the week, students will have specials classes based on whether it is “Day 1, 2, 3,” etc.
In the event of school being closed, the day in the cycle would not be missed. For example, if Tuesday is Day 4 and school gets cancelled due to inclement weather, then the first day that we return to school would be Day 4.
This type of schedule provides a more balanced and even distribution of specials classes throughout the year. The six-day schedule allows all schools to more efficiently and effectively use part-time faculty and those teachers who work in more than one school. Please note that only the specials (art, music, library, Spanish, P.E. and band and orchestra instrumental lessons) follow the six-day format. Programs such as ELL, Enrichment classes and Speech will continue to be scheduled according to a Monday through Friday schedule. Classroom teachers will review the schedule with students.
In order to avoid any confusion regarding what days to “dress” for physical education (gym) class, all children are encouraged to come dressed for vigorous play every day. Students will be outside for recess as often as weather permits, and play clothes and sneakers are always the best choice. With the exceptions of school picture day and occasional concerts or performances, all students are encouraged to wear sneakers as part of their “school uniform” every day.
