School Site Council PTA meeting The Greenbrook School School Site Council is a group of teachers, parents and community members entrusted with the task of academic goal setting. This school based management group gives the entire school community a voice in making important decisions which directly affect the quality of education in our school. The School Site Council acts as a liaison between parents, teachers, administrators and Board of Education members. It consists of six parents, five teachers and two school administrators. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month. Some projects which have been developed by the Council are Author's Night, K-2 Bedtime Story Hour, and Math, Science, and Technology Night.

School Site Council Meeting Minutes

September 22, 2009

Heather and Susan welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the year.

Dr. Speesler gave the Board of Education report:

All of the elementary Back-to-School nights are complete.  There has been a good start to the school year.

The NJ QSAC visits will be coming up soon.  South Brunswick is in the 3rd wave of visitations for this year.

There are only two School Site Councils in the district:  Greenbrook and the High School.

The district website has been updated and new content added.

The district is trying a new auto-dialer this year.

The Board of Education meetings are the 2nd and 3rd Mondays of the month.

If anyone has any questions or concerns to bring to the Board, the e-mail addresses of all the Board members are on the district website and in the back of the District calendars that were sent home.

Pat Holliday gave the Principal’s Report:

The Code of Conduct (CARES) is being reinforced in the school.  These guidelines are also contained on page 22 in the district calendar. Gwen Waxman is part of a district team that is working on implementing different ways to reinforce the CARES values across the district.

Wednesday, 9/23, is the annual meeting on Title 1 Funding; Lynn Nowak will be attending as the parent representative.

The EPIC program’s Parent Academy starts on Thursday, 9/24, at Crossroads North.  The program is about Logical Consequences.

Thursday is an early release day for school planning.

We have received the preliminary results of the NJ ASK from last year.  With the revisions to the proficiency score, there were several students who scored partially proficient.

Pat presented a PPT that describes the results.  Following the presentation, we brainstormed strategies to meet the greater need based on these results (see below).

Result letters were sent home to parents this week as well.

No school on Monday, 9/28, for Yom Kippur.  There is a list of the state-approved religious holidays listed in the back of the district calendar.

Brainstorming ideas to help the kids improve the NJ ASK scores:

Read with children on a regular basis, even in the older grades.  Discuss the story, not just what happened, but WHY it happened or what may come next.  This can be done with movies and TV as well; it doesn’t have to be books.

·       Follow up with a workshop or newsletter to help parents ask the “right questions” to help kids with critical reading skills

·       Mosaic of Thought offers many comprehension strategies

·       Operation Bookworm – ask Ellen Gordon to do a workshop on these skills?

The school will continue with the existing interventions – in the early morning (before school) and after school.  There are 2 full time instructional support teachers in our school as well.

The state will report the district AYP for NCLB in October.

SSC Committees sign up

Bedtime Story Hour is scheduled for October 22.  Readers are needed; books can be provided.

Refreshments will be Chips Ahoy and Vienna Fingers cookies.  Pitchers of milk will be placed in each classroom as well.  SSC will purchase the refreshments.

There are definitely cups and napkins left over from the Gator Gathering.  We also need baskets and/or platters for the cookies to be placed in each classroom.

Future Agenda Topics:

-       Workshops and/or print media for parents re. the ASK Testing results

-       Updating the SSC website

Our next meeting is Tuesday 10/20 and 7:30 pm.

Everyone was encouraged to invite other parents to come.
