Greenbrook Elementary School
Greenbrook Elementary School has been selected as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and received two New Jersey Star School Awards, one for its Auditorily Disabled Program and the other for the successful reading intervention program, Operation Bookworm. The central focus of the school is "the school as community". Students, staff and parents are united by a common purpose and commitment to the ongoing vision for creating a rich and inclusive environment.
The highly qualified and dedicated faculty includes a Nationally Board Certified teacher. This professional staff works collaboratively to provide strong academic instruction, share successful practices and promote open communication. Specialists and classroom teachers work together to meet the needs of each child. In addition, the faculty frequently engages in discussions of current educational theory through grade level meetings and book study groups. The school is committed to the principles of the Responsive Classroom and the Coalition of Essential Schools. In addition, through our partnership with the College of New Jersey, our school serves as a Professional Development School. These ventures inspire the continuing growth of the professional staff by offering mentor programs for future teachers and encouraging the networking with other professionals throughout the state.
Greenbrook School actively promotes parent participation. The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and School Site Council (SSC) are formal forums for parent involvement. These organizations work in collaboration with the administration and staff to provide meaningful opportunities for parents, students and staff to come together. Additionally, parents volunteer to work with students in Operation Bookworm and other programs within the school, serve on decision-making committees, and participate in workshops and curriculum discussions. During the school day, parents can work in classrooms on a regular basis reading with students, helping children practice skills, assisting students in preparing presentations and joining the school for an assembly that highlights a particular class or grade level.
Students are offered a variety of enriching activities that provide opportunities to participate beyond the core curriculum. this year we opened a new technology lab that allows entire classes to work on specific computer skills and complete multimedia projects. Children can also learn to play a musical instrument, join the band or sing in the chorus. Art, chess, drama, folk dancing, technology and yearbook are some of the club activities children may choose from to broaden their interests. Students are showcased in grade level musical productions and participate in school assemblies regularly. Community Helpers, Gator Aides and Peer Mediators offer students an opportunity to practice leadership and provide community service to the school. Enrichment support and a program called "Math For All Kinds of Minds" provides additional critical thinking, project-based periods for students.
Greenbrook Elementary School is a community dedicated to the task of educating children to become lifelong learners. It provides an environment where every student can learn, fosters self-esteem and honors the diversity of its population.
