This Week in Room 411
Week of
September 1, 2008
Welcome to the wonderful world of fifth grade!
On this page you will find some announcements and an outline of what I have planned for our week. Please remember that plans can change because of events outside my control. I make every effort to adhere to my plans and to update this page regularly, but, as you know, life happens.
You should have gotten my introductory letter and some "homework" for students and parents. It will be very helpful to me if students can bring both pages to me the first day of school.
In the letter I included some guidelines about school supplies. Here they are again:
Despite the fact that we have a beautiful, nearly brand-new classroom, we still do not want to bring more than we need to, so it is still important to keep the size of backpacks and lunch boxes as small as reasonable. In addition, I don't assign a lot of homework that requires the carrying of heavy books back and forth, so wheeled backpacks are not necessary and, in fact, create problems in the hallways and are a storage problem even in our new spacious accommodations. Please do NOT bring backpacks on wheels, binders, and large lunchboxes.
Next, I imagine you are beginning to think about school supplies. Here are some things you will need:
√ Pencils and erasers (bring as many as you like, often!)
√ 1 or 2 Heavyweight folders with pockets for homework
√ Notebooks (8 1/2x11") (only 1 or 2 are needed)
√ Special crayons or colored pencils
√ Small pencil box
√ Small mechanical pencil sharpener with its own collector container
MUST HAVE for home use (so that you can do your homework):
√ Protractor and compass
√ Calculator (to be used when permitted)
√ Dictionary (appropriate level for 5th grader)
√ Thesaurus (appropriate level for 5th grader)
√ Customary measurement ruler (inches)
√ Metric measurement ruler (centimeters)
Because we will sometimes be moving the desks into different configurations, students should not have anything more at their desks than they can actually put inside them every day!
Please feel free to e-mail me at thea.dahlberg@sbschools.org if you have additional questions.
See you in September!
