Math

So far the students have finished units on place value and multiplication, but please remember to continually practice these skills at home.

We will begin our next unit on Geometry.  By the end of the unit, the students will be able to:

  • compare polygons by their sides and angles

  • recognize right, obtuse, and actue angles and find them in everday life

  • name segments, lines, rays, and angles

  • model similar and congruent figures

  • flip, slide, and turn figures

  • sort and compare solids by their faces, edges, and vertices

  • match a 3-D pattern with its net

  • identify lines of symmetry

  • create tessellations

  • use coordinates grids

The Geometry unit is laden with terminology.  The following words are the vocabulary the students need to know:

solids, faces, edges, vertices, 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid, sphere, cone, cylinder, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, circle, diamond, octagon, trapezoid, parallelogram, pentagon, angle, polygon, right angle, congruent, similar, flip, slide, turn, symmetry, ordered pair, coordinates, line segments, horizontal, vertical, lines, tessellations

Study Island

Study Island is a great way to extend student's learning into the home. All that's needed is a computer and internet connection. To use Study Island, log on to www.studyisland.com, and have your child enter their username and password. Make sure that your child uses pencil and paper when necessary. Study Island is also a great preparation tool for the NJ ASK exam in March.
