Mrs. Colquist's Message

This is updated for 2017-2018!

Welcome to 2nd Grade!

We are the Terrific Thinkers Class!

Below is some information you may need as the school year begins.

The best way is to email me at lori.colquist@sbschools.org   You should get an email from me each day (unless there are technical difficulties here).  If you have not already received an email from me, please send me your email address today. Thank you!

Also, I will be using the communication tool, bloomz.net to keep you in touch and show you pictures of daily events and special events.  Here is what you need to know:

If you are sending in money (cash or check made out to South Brunswick Board of Education), please put it in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, my name, and “lunch money” on the front. Loose money can be easily lost.

Birthdays are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your child’s special day. You are welcome to come for the celebration or send in a small snack for your child’s special treat. This is not mandatory for birthdays. We will also sing and take a few minutes to recognize this special day. If you do choose to send in a birthday snack, please notify me a few days ahead of time so I can plan for it and we can agree on a good time. If your child’s birthday is in the summer, you may choose to celebrate it at the end of the year OR at the “half-birthday” mark.  I will be in touch about allergies in class as well.

Our class does have a snack time every day. Keep in mind that this is not a meal. Snack should consist of healthy foods that are low in sugar and saturated fat. Apples, yogurt, or carrot sticks are great snack options.

I will frequently send home a Scholastic Book Club flyer. It is not mandatory that you purchase books at any time, but it is an excellent opportunity for you to buy books at a great price for your child. Also, our class is rewarded with books and other classroom materials. If you choose to purchase books, you will have two choices for doing so. You can choose to fill out the order form on the back of the flyer and send it in an envelope with a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs or you may order books from our class account on the website and pay by credit card online (www.scholastic.com). Our online code is GL3CH.

I will be looking for “Mystery Readers” for a few themes this year.  More information will be available at Back to School Night.

Each child will have a week to be the student of the week (Star Student). The children will have a poster project to complete in advance of the week and the children will share about themselves all week. I will have a sign-up sheet available at Back to School Night so that parents may choose to select a week that coincides with special days or avoids family scheduling conflicts.

Please consider donating any of the following items for classroom use:

baby wipes, paper towels, pencils, twistable colored pencils, markers (thin or thick lines), small or large Ziploc bags, glue sticks

Your child will have homework every night (Monday through Thursday) starting soon. Reading for 10-15 minutes is required each night. I will also send home word study, math, and additional items at various times. Homework should be practice and feel “easy” to your child and it should not take longer than 20 minutes. I will talk more about this at Back to School night.
