Seal Class News September 28, 2008
The first few weeks of school have flown by! The children have settled into our daily routines and transition through all academic activities with ease and efficiency. Reading groups are up and running and the children are quickly advancing in their reading skills. In spelling, we are focusing on one syllable words which feature the short vowel sounds of a and o. During writing workshop, we are exploring books with repeating lines or phrases.
In mathematics, we are exploring the concepts of odd/even, greater/fewer and we will begin tally notation soon. The children seem to really enjoy playing math games together.
We have begun our science investigation - "Observing Living Things" which will continue throughout the school year. The children are learning the habits of mind that will allow us to explore many science concepts in first grade and beyond. When doing science, the children wonder and ask questions, they observe and record, draw pictures and count things. They make predictions and watch for outcomes. And as they told me this week, science is FUN!
Thank you for responding to the National Geopgraphic Explorer subscription notice. As soon as we have everyone's money collected, we can place out order to begin receiving this wonderful magazine, which will enhace our science studies.
Trip permission forms went home on Friday. We hope that all those parents that signed up to chaperone during our Open House will still be able to come. Please let us know by sending in the form as soon as you can. If you were not able to attend Open House but you would like to chaperone, please let us know as well.

We ask that our students wear sneakers every day. Sneakers can help to keep them safer at recess, on the playground and on the blacktop.
Snack Time: We take a snack break everyday, mid-morning. Please pack a nutritious snack for your child which will provide a refueling stop. We always have emergency snack food in our room (pretzels). So, if you forget to include snack, or run out one day, don't worry.
School Lunch: Many of our students really enjoy buying lunch at school. The meals are nutritionally balanced, visually appealing and receive rave reviews for taste. There are many choices available every day. We have a debit card system, so you can prepay and the cost of the meals will be deducted whenever your child buys lunch. You can pay one day at a time if you prefer. In this case, please enclose the money in an envelop or sealed baggie with your child's first and last names on the outside. The cost for each lunch is $1.85. You do not need to write a note each time your child buys (unless you would like to). Your child can tell me his/her choice on the days that s/he purchases lunch and I will record it for our cafeteria staff.
Labels: No matter how hard we try to keep track of the children's belongings, things still seem to get lost, especially in the lunch room and at recess. We ask that you put your child's name on everything that you send to school so that it can easily be returned to your child in case it is misplaced. It is especially important that lunchboxes, backpacks, jackets, sweatshirts and sweaters be labeled with your child's first and last names.
Class Leader: Several times this year, each child will have the opportunity to lead our class. This is an exciting opportunity, which the children look forward to and really enjoy. On the day that your child is class leader, s/he will choose our greeting, lead us through all the calendar activities and the graphing challenge and guide us as we read the message aloud. In the afternoon, your child will sit in our rocker and share a book with the class. If your child is not yet reading, the sharing can include talking about the story and showing the illustrations. By winter break, everyone will be reading books aloud during their class leader time.
Communication: We hope that our Greenbrook web site will give you a window into our classroom. On it, we will let you know the skills we are addressing and also tell you know about upcoming trips and events. If you need to contact me, please send in a note or email. I check my email several times each day, at school and at home. Also, Mrs. Loehr goes through each folder every day and immediately alerts me to any messages which are urgent. If you need to reach me during the day, please leave a message with out secretaries and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Birthdays: Birthday celebrations are very important to our first graders and we love to take time to honor each child's special day. If you would like, you can send a birthday treat in with your child, drop a treat off at the main office in the morning.
