Class News

September 2017

Dear First Grade Families,

We have had a great start to the school year. I have enjoyed getting to know this class of friendly and hardworking students.

Our first grade readers have been working hard to build their independent reading stamina! Students are practicing the three ways to read a book: 1. Read the pictures; 2. Read the words; 3. Retell the story. We have also been practicing how to write and draw responses to stories we have read and sort words by spelling patterns.

As writers we are getting used to the routines. In this writing unit students will become familiar with what Writer’s Workshop looks like in first grade and write personal narratives. We explored why people write and the different paper we write on.

In math we have focused on using math tools that will help us learn. We are becoming experts at rotating through our math centers, playing games cooperatively and taking care of supplies.

We will start science this week by talking about what scientists do and use hand lenses to make observations. Thank you for the apple donations!

We are spending a lot of time on projects about how to treat others. Our class created a list of rules we will follow and collaboratively worked on posters to decorate our room. We also made friendship chains using kind words and “filled our buckets” with ways to make each other feel good!

Homework

Homework will be coming home October 2nd and will be due on October 28th. Directions for the homework will be printed on the calendar. Please email me with any questions.

Dear First Grade Families,

The weather is finally getting cold enough to feel like Fall! We have been very busy in our classroom.

Thank you all so much for your apple donations. We used the apples to learn what real scientists do. We explored using hand lenses, observed using our five senses, recorded information in our notebooks and sorted apples in many different categories. The best part was tasting the apples after we made them into applesauce!

Our first grade writers have explored many different types of writing including recipes! We used our applesauce recipe to make applesauce and practiced retelling the steps in order. Then we illustrated books to match. See if your first grader could teach you how to make applesauce!

In our reading block we have started our guided reading groups and students are excited to read new books and practice new skills. Students are becoming experts at “Read To Self”, “Read To Someone” and “Work on Writing”. We will add “Listen To Reading” next week and finally get to use our IPads!

In math we are deepening our number sense by doing many activities with number lines and hundreds charts. Students have been practicing working with a partner or group and playing games cooperatively.

Homework

Homework will be due on October 28th.
