Grade 3 - 5    R E A D I N G   S T R A T E G I E S

1. Skip a word and read the rest of the sentence; use clues within the sentence to help.

2. Substitute with another word that makes sense.

3. Use picture clues from the text (if there are pictures).

4. Look at the letters of the unknown word and try to sound it out.

5. Look for the root word, the prefix, the suffix, and familiar chunks in the word.

6. Use text clues, such as boldface, italics, underlining.

7. Try a dictionary.

8. Ask a friend.
