How to make a change for a dollar This hint will help find how much change you could get from a dollar without using paper and pencil. The hint is to look at the hundredths number and count up until it becomes a "0". Example: 0.45, 0.46, 0.47, 0.48, 0.49, 0.50. Then remember how many numbers you had to count before you get to a "0". (In this case, it is 6.) Then take the number you got that had the "0" and look at the tenths place. Then add that number plus another number and make it equal 10. Example: 6+?=10 6+4=10. Remember to have the number in the tenths place first in the addition problem. Then when you find the answer, take the number that was the mystery one and put it in front of the one you got in the beginning. Then you have your answer. (In this case, it is 0.46) Here an example of the whole thing: 0.74 start with 0.75, 0.76, 0.77, 0.78 ,0.79 ,0.80.

It took six numbers until I got to a 0.

Then I took the 0.80 and looked at the tenths place. I took that and I solved the addition.

8+?=10 8+2=10

The answer is 0.26.

(There is a six in the hundredths place because that is how many counts it took to get to 0.80. )

An easy way of finding change is by counting up from the cost (of the item). Here is what I do: Example: Cost is 45 cents.
1) You give the cashier $1.
2) I first round it up to the nearest tens. -> add a nickel and you get 50 cents.
3) Then see how many dimes it will take to get to $1.00. -> Add 5 dimes which worth 50 cents
4) Then add up the tens and the ones. (The coins used for counting up.) 50+5 = 55 cents.

The change is 55 cents!
