Welcome to First Grade!

We are already in October!  That was fast.  We have been busy getting into our daily routines.  I have 2 TCNJ student interns once a week on Fridays for 8 weeks.  They will be with me for the entire day and eventually teach a math and science lesson.

First Grade Curriculum
The South Brunswick School District Curriculum being taught at the first grade level integrates the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) with developmentally-appropriate concepts. We teach for deep understanding of the "big ideas" in each content area, and we encourage students to wonder about the "essential questions."

Technology is integrated into instruction in meaningful ways. Students and teachers use digital tools and information to solve problems individually and collaboratively to create and communicate knowledge. (NJCCCS 8.1)

Reading

We have been learning about reading tools to use for how to sound out words.  We made a paper tool box and each tool helps decode a word in a different way.  They have been using these strategies when writing or reading.  I am currently doing reading assessments everyday for the entire month for report cards.  Everyone is reading well and increasing their reading level.

Writiing

We are learning how to write a "How-To" book. The students will be teaching everyone how to do or how to make something.  They will learn the features of a How- To and write a few books this month.

 Homework

I hope you have tried the games and activities in our October Homework packet.  Please remember to return the calender by Jan.2nd.  I will be checking off who returns it.

-matching addition facts with a ten frame

-find sums that are 1 more or 2 more or fewer (less)

-combinations of 10

-tell and act out addition stories

-find the sums of two addends

-use the communitive property and associative property to find sums

Here are the concepts that I will be covering in the month of November, December, & January:

-odd & even

-greater than >, less than<, and equal=

-count to 120 starting at any number less than 120
