School-Community Partnerships South Brunswick Township Public Schools has established partnerships with other agencies to provide services and programs for all District children. These services include community outreach in times of crisis or when the need arises, providing mental health services to students and their families as well as discussion groups for interested parties.
Community Resource Team (CRT)
The Community Resource Team is an ongoing partnership of organizations and agencies from within the South Brunswick community that is committed to supporting all township residents. The team is responsible for identifying community needs, establishing interagency agreements and providing the necessary training for its members and others within the community. In addition, CRT works to assure clear, accurate and effective communication and helps assess the effectiveness of a response following an event. Future plans include creating and managing a Community Volunteer Service Program and coordinating the development and maintenance of a Community Resource Database.
Members, representing the police department, township government and government services, the township Clergy Association, the school district and other community agencies work together to foster community well-being and provide resources needed for the community to address the four phases of emergency management-mitigation, management, preparedness and response/recovery.
EPIC
Every Person Influences Children (EPIC) is a program funded by the South Brunswick Board of Education and the South Brunswick Municipal Alliance whose mission is to help parents, teachers and community members raise children to become responsible and capable adults. EPIC offers small discussion group workshops throughout the year for parents and guardians of children from infancy through adolescence, focusing on positive parenting skills, including, but not limited to: discipline, helping your child succeed in school, fostering self-esteem, coping with stress and frustration and conflict resolution. EPIC workshops are offered through the South Brunswick Parent Academy and at individual schools throughout the District. Workshop facilitators are trained parents and staff members from the District. In addition, an online library of parenting and care-giver information from The Parent Institute provides substantive, research-based information and support on key issues affecting children today, from the elementary through teenage years. Topics include responsibility, discipline, school success, family time and more. Each of the guides is 8-12 pages in length - brief enough for busy parents to read, thorough enough to provide useful ideas parents can put into action immediately to help their children. The Academy was founded on the concept of “Solving the Puzzle of Parenting … One Piece at a Time.” Now in its seventh year, SBPA continues to offer parenting workshops, as well as District workshops on curriculum, instruction and safe and caring schools. This year’s workshops will focus on parenting issues for the 21st century. New this year to the SBPA, is the introduction of a Parent Academy blog, as well as recommendations for companion readings to further supplement and enhance the information discussed in the workshops. The mission of the HCHY Assets Initiative is to help youth thrive by making healthy choices and avoiding risky behaviors. This can be accomplished by building Developmental Assets, which are building blocks of healthy development. The HCHY Assets Initiative is under the auspices of the South Brunswick Health Department and funded by the South Brunswick Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse, as part of a grant from GCADA, the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and partners with school and community groups to provide opportunities for asset building. The BRIDGE Center is a dynamic partnership between South Brunswick School District and the University Behavioral Healthcare (UBHC), a division of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). The primary objective of the program is to help assure that pre-teens and teenagers will have readily available access to quality counseling and other support services.
The BRIDGE Center provides a range of free, confidential recreational and mental health services at South Brunswick High School and Crossroads Middle Schools to all middle and high school students. Services include individual, group, and fami ly counseling, conflict resolution, parent support groups and recreational programming. Referrals to the Center can be made by students, parents or school staff. Parental permission is required for participation.
SUDZ (Stop Underage Drinking Zone)
The Stop Underage Drinking Zone (SUDZ) is a partnership of South Brunswick agencies, schools and community members whose mission is to prevent alcohol use by anyone under the age of 21. SUDZ was initiated by parents for parents and provides education and resources to all concerned adults regarding ways to prevent underage drinking and to keep our youth safe. Members of the Initiative are from all areas of the community and anyone who is concerned about underage drinking is encouraged to join.
