Internet Safety South
Brunswick School District believes that all students should have access to technology
for educational purposes when they act in a responsible, efficient, courteous
and legal manner.
In accordance with Federal law, the District complies with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Enacted by Congress in December 2000, CIPA addresses concerns about accessing Internet sites in schools and public libraries.
To comply, the District installed a filtering system that can block school computers, including those in the Media Centers, from accessing inappropriate activities and materials on the Internet. The monitoring of minors' online activities helps to ensure their safety and security. This will also prevent the unauthorized access of the School District's online system by hackers and other unlawful individuals from obtaining personally identifiable information regarding minors.
This protection agent also puts the District in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal regulation implemented in August 2000.
Each year, students must have a signed Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement Form on file before access to the Internet or computer systems will be permitted. Violators are subject to disciplinary action. Staff members are also required to have a signed Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement Form on file and receive training annually in this area.
Finally, just as we teach students in the early grades to be aware of their personal safety in the real world (e.g. stranger danger), we teach our older students about keeping safe in the cyber world and their responsibilities as digital citizens. Units of study on cyber safety are embedded in the Health Curriculum at the third grade level (what's private), fourth grade level (being a good cyber citizen) and fifth grade (social networking). At the middle school, Cyber Safety is emphasized during New Jersey School Violence Awareness Week in October and high school peer leaders deliver Cyber bullying lessons to freshmen as part of the Peer Leadership Program.
To aid in this endeavor, School District officials have created an ongoing series of informational brochures for parents that features a variety of topics focusing on keeping children safe in Cyber Space.
