PRESCHOOL DISABLILITIES PROGRAM
2008-2009
The South Brunswick School District offers a Preschool Disabilities program for children ages three and four who have been evaluated by a Child Study Team and found to be eligible for Special Education and Related Services. The District also offers Integrated Preschool programs for students with disabilities who require services within a regular education environment. Other programs and services are available to students as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs. Children in the Preschool Disabled program attend school Monday through Friday in either a morning or afternoon session for two and one-half hours per day. The programs are currently located at Constable School and Cambridge School, however the locations are subject to change. Each class is taught by a certified special education teacher and assisted by paraprofessionals. Related services such as speech/language therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy are provided and included in each child's IEP, when needed.
Preschool Disabled as defined by the law means, "an identifiable disabling condition and/or measurable developmental impairment which occurs in children between the ages of three and five years and requires special education and related services." Upon referral, a Child Study Team evaluation is completed which includes cognitive, learning, social and speech and language testing. Results of these assessments are used to determine eligibility for the program and related services.
South Brunswick Public Schools offer integrated preschool classes for typically developing children as well as students with special needs to give each student the opportunity to further develop his or her skills.
The daily schedule of the class may include circle time, group work time, planned center time, snack, story time, outdoor play, music, speech and language activities, and motor coordination play. The children are actively involved in exploring their environment through hands-on learning and interacting with peers. This program is based upon a developmentally appropriate curriculum and is designed to meet the needs of all children.
